The Department of Geography was started in 1979 in this college as an undergraduate degree program. In the year 1996 the Post graduate degree program in Applied Geography was introduced and then upgraded into the Post Graduate and Research Department by the Bharathdasan University, Tiruchirapalli in the year 2000. During this period M.Phil./Ph.D., both full-time and part-time were introduced.
The Department has completed 24 M.Phil., and two Ph.D and several other students have registered and continuing their research. So far three major research projects were submitted to the Government of India funding agencies and present one major scheme by the UGC is in progress. In the year 2003-2004 the department was recognized by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India under the Fund for Infrastructure Development in Science and Technology (FIST-DST) and this is the first Government College in the state to get
 
such recognition. Apart from teaching the department has organized several national level seminar/conferences and workshops to train the college and university teachers depending on the technological development in the Spatial Information Technology.
